The Yankees were also considered to be interested in Cole's services but contract talks with the Pirates fell off and never resumed.

Gerrit Cole may eventually end up being traded to the Astros, but conflicting reports indicated as of Wednesday afternoon that Houston had not reached a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the starting pitcher. It wasn't immediately clear what Pittsburgh will receive in return.

Shortly after, FOX Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal, who previously said a deal was "close", appeared to walk back his claim. He has a 3.50 ERA in 127 career starts. His best season came in 2015 when he went 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA, 1.091 WHIP and 202 strikeouts in 32 starts.

Although Cole is coming off a mediocre season, the Yankees likely believed they could transform him into a strong starter by having the 27-year-old rely less on his fastball and more on his off-speed pitches.

This would be an major get for an Astros team that already boasts former Cy Young winners Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel atop its rotation.

The Yankees' rotation now includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray and CC Sabathia.
