Flores snubs Stoke for Espanyol stay

Former Watford boss Flores was tipped to take over from Mark Hughes, sacked after an FA Cup third-round exit at fourth-tier side Coventry City last weekend.

Stoke managerial target Quique Sanchez Flores has committed his future to Espanyol amid heavy speculation that he is to be the next Stoke manager.

The Ireland boss was made the clear favourite by the bookies this morning when Sanchez Flores said he was happy to stay at Espanyol.

Balague, a well-respected Spanish journalist, claims the current Espanyol boss has already met with the club's board over a potential deal. "I am the coach and will be".

'We feel happy. We are in a happy place and we don't want to break that up'.

"I belong to Espanyol".

Early discussions were encouraging, but they will now turn their attention back to Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill after Flores' change of heart.

"I live in a big city, in one of the best leagues, and I have reason to be happy and not to live anxious".

In addition, according to The Daily Telegraph's Luke Edwards, O'Neill is not interested in taking charge at Stoke on a short-term basis.

They had hoped to announce the hire on Friday but negotiations dragged on, meaning he is likely to watch Monday night's game with Manchester United from the stands rather than the touchline.
