"This is an exciting moment for us", Sebastian Mikosz, CEO and managing director of Kenya Airways Group said in a statement.

The Kenya Airways, starting October the 28th, 2018, will start offering non-stop flights to the U.S. with a new Nairobi-New York route.

He said that airline will operate its state of the art Boeing 787 Dreamliner with a capacity of 234 passengers.

He said the flights will see Kenya Airways employ more pilots and more crew to facilitate the functionality of the new flight route launched. It will depart Jomo Kenyatta airport at 23:25, arriving at JFK airport at 06:25 the following morning, with return flights departing NY at 12:25 and landing in Nairobi at 10:55 the next day.

With the commencement of this route, Kenya Airways will become the first and only airline to provide nonstop service from East Africa to the U.S. The route will also be the 6th nonstop route from New York's JFK Airport to the African continent. It will land in NY the next day at 6.30 AM.

The flight is scheduled to take 15 hours, a departure from the previous flight time of 22 hours including lengthy layovers passengers from JKIA had to cope with using connecting flights.

Kenya Airways Chairman Michael Joseph said that the flights will symbolize the comeback for the airline that has been making losses for the past few years.

Jim Holden, president of Holden Safaris, said, "Safaris in Kenya are very competitively priced, and now with direct flight connections, the destination offers an even more attractive safari package". It is the largest tourist source market, and in the period to October 2017 accounted for close to 100 000 tourists to Kenya.

The airline already serves Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and cities in Asia. He says the new route will return the airline into profitability. Mikosz revealed the carrier will continue to modernise its fleet though its 32 aircraft are some of the youngest in Africa.
